BACH

About BACH

Scintillating, unifying and calming. In the BACH programme, four choreographers each draw highly individual inspiration from the imposing oeuvre of this world-famous composer. Selon désir by Andonis Foniadakis is a whirlwind of energy and desire set to the St Matthew and St John Passions. In contrast, the fleet-footed Corpus Bach by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Nicolas Vladyslav is a playful interaction between four dancers, accompanied live by the cellist Detmar Leertouwer. Manuel Vignoulle has created ANIMA specially for our BACH show: a meditative ensemble piece about the quest for one’s true self. And Introdans dancers and film-makers Jurriën Schobben and Alberto Villanueva Rodríguez are making a dance film, inspired by the life of Johann Sebastian Bach. His story is presented in a contemporary and abstract way, based on three important aspects of the composer’s life.

Please note that the premiere of BACH will take place at Stadsschouwburg Nijmegen. The performance can also be seen in Arnhem, at the end of the tour, at May 19th and 20th, 2023.

Additional information

Corpus Bach | Choreography Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui & Nicolas Vladyslav
It’s no secret that choreography and music are ideal (dance) partners. In the playful Corpus Bach, Flemish-Moroccan dance-maker Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Frenchman Nicolas Vladyslav lift this partnership to a whole new level. Every note played by the cellist, live on stage, is reflected in the undulating bodies of the dancers, from their toes to the tips of their fingers. Read Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui’s and Nicolas Vladyslav’s interview here.

ANIMA | Choreography Manuel Vignoulle
ANIMA by choreographer Manuel Vignoulle, for a large ensemble of dancers, is about a personal journey: the one that takes you to your true self. ‘We start on the outside,’ explains Vignoulle, ‘with the superficial façade, and then we travel ever further towards the inside, until all the external layers have been peeled away and we come to the essence, to the goal.’ ‘Manuel creates dance with few frills,’ says Roel Voorintholt. ‘It’s clean, calm, meditative, without any extras that aren’t really relevant.’ Read Manuel Vignoulle’s interview here.

“As still as the evening begins, so intense and dynamical it ends.” Theaterkrant

“The energy level starts high, stays high and ends high. The spectator leaves the theatre with a charged battery.”  Het Parool

Selon désir | Choreography Andonis Foniadakis
Selon désir is a whirlwind of energy and desire, set to the opening choruses of both the St Matthew and St John Passions by Bach. ‘It’s incredible what choreographer Andonis Foniadakis achieves with the dancers,’ says artistic director Roel Voorintholt. ‘He demands the absolute maximum from them, gets them to move every fibre of their bodies. No one remains unmoved by his work.’ Read Andonis Foniadakis’ interview here.

Dance film The volume in the flatness | Jurrien Schobben & Alberto Villanueva
The volume in the flatness is a film about Johann Sebastian Bach, or rather the man behind the composer. Two of our dancers and filmmakers Jurriën Schobben and Alberto Villanueva abstractly focus on his personality rather than his oeuvre. With an almost literal look into his mind, three aspects of his life are portrayed; his desire for perfection, his stubbornness and his perseverance. Read the interview with Jurriën and Alberto here.
