Keti Koti

Keti Koti

Keti Koti
Keti Koti, (pronunciation: kittykohty) (Sranantongo: “Chains Broken”), is an annual celebration on July 1 on the occasion of Emancipation Day in Suriname. Keti Koti marks the date when slavery was abolished in Suriname in 1863. However, enslaved people in Surinam would not be fully free until 1873, after a mandatory 10-year transition period during which they had to work on the plantations for minimal wages and with state-sanctioned violence: If they were discovered outside without a pass, they could be imprisoned.

Again this year, Introdans will be commemorating Keti Koti in Arnhem
150 years ago, slavery came to an end in Surinam and the Netherlands Antilles, which were then colonies of the Netherlands. This is increasingly being commemorated and celebrated in the Netherlands. For Keti Koti, Introdans has contributed to an extensive interactive digital teaching package that the Arnhem cultural center Rozet has developed for primary education.

Education package for primary education

Rozet has developed an extensive interactive digital teaching package for primary education. Introdans contributed to this. You can find the Rozet Educational Note Keti Koti for primary education here (Dutch).

In 2022, the Introdans education team created a Freedom Dance for Keti Koti Arnhem: an accessible modern dance combination inspired by the dances danced by people that were enslaved. This freedom dance is part of Rozet’s teaching package, and can be danced by young and old as a YouTube link.

The Freedom Dance will be updated for the 2023 Keti Koti commemoration.

Workshops

Prior to the Keti Koti commemoration, an Intro dance teacher can provide dance workshops for schools, sports clubs with the aim of imparting the meaning of dance and Keti Koti to a young audience. Workshop dates: Monday June 26, Tuesday June 27 and Thursday June 29. A dance teacher from Introdans danced the Freedom Dance on July 1, 2022 with many visitors to the Festival. This year we want to expand the live range and dance the dance with the visitors on July 1 and 2 during the Keti Koti commemoration and celebration.
