Project Dancing Words - Spoken Dance in Suriname 2.0

Last week, a special project week took place in Paramaribo, Suriname, full of dance and spoken word, organised by Introdans and the Ilonka Elmont Foundation, in collaboration with Fonds Kind & Handicap and Deelstof.

This project brought together Dutch and Surinamese artists and dance makers to create an inspiring intercultural exchange. During Dancing Words Spoken Dance 2.0, children from special education with a physical and or intellectual disability discovered the power of dance and spoken word as a way to express themselves. They learned to use their bodies and voices to tell their own stories.

The project gives young people with a physical or intellectual disability the opportunity to express themselves creatively and show their talents. It was a very successful project that shows how powerful art and culture can be for inclusion and personal development.

“In a society that is very competitive, it is important that children experience that they are allowed to be themselves. Art is a powerful way to support that. Especially in special education we see how well dance, language and music connect with the world of the students. We were amazed by what the children showed in such a short time. It does not matter what your body looks like, because everyone can dance.”

Made possible by the Elja Foundation and Fonds Kind & Handicap.
