Unexpected encounters and virtuoso choreographies
Work by Akram Kahn, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Stijn Celis, Mauro Bigonzetti, Robert Battle and others.
The new Introdans dance season of 23-24 puts a variety of makers in the spotlight with a large mix of choreographies for a wide audience. The season opens with the production FALL, in which the dance company from Arnhem brings together two of the most important and celebrated contemporary choreographers of our time: Akram Khan and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. In December, Introdans continues the new tradition of family performances around the holidays with the famous classic Swan Lake, with a modern twist by the Belgian choreographer Stijn Celis. In the springtime you can see SPRING, an exuberant evening centred around the work of the Italian choreographer and audience favourite Mauro Bigonzetti. The season closes with a dazzling End of Season Gala, in which gems from the Introdans repertoire are interspersed with new work and surprising encounters.
Artistic director of Introdans Roel Voorintholt: “I am looking forward to the 53rd season of Introdans with a beautiful palette of internationally renowned choreographers who have in common that they all use a dynamic, energetic dance language.”
FALL – featuring top choreographers Akram Khan and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui
In September, the season opens with FALL. In FALL, Introdans brings together two of the most important and celebrated contemporary choreographers: British-Bengali Akram Khan and Flemish-Moroccan Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. Although their backgrounds are quite different, there are also many similarities between these two dance artists – who once shared the stage in the magnificent Zero Degrees. They are both master storytellers and also passionate bridge-builders, who impressively combine diverse cultures, dance styles and art disciplines in their work. In Fall this creates a programme which brings together dynamism and stillness, virtuosity and poetry. “Even though the three choreographies in FALL are very challenging and impressive, they also radiate a serene, meditative power. At the end you feel fully recharged – it’s a breath of fresh air in this world of ours, which is so often hectic and overwrought,” says Roel Voorintholt, artistic director of Introdans.
Swan Lake – a popular classic in a new, contemporary version | Family show
Following the huge success of Carmen.maquia, in the 2022/2023 season Introdans now once again presents a well-known, universally popular classic in a new, contemporary interpretation. With his version of Swan Lake the Belgian choreographer Stijn Celis has created a fresh, humorous and innovative version of the ‘ballet of ballets’: Swan Lake, which 125 years after its original premiere is still performed all over the world. Celis’ version of Swan Lake is a large-scale, lively production in which all dancers of the Introdans ensemble will shine, set against an imposing stage design and moving to the famous, majestic and moving music of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.
SPRING – celebrate the start of spring with the exuberant dance of Mauro Bigonzetti
Let’s celebrate springtime, and celebrate life! Introdans presents SPRING, a programme that centres around the work of Mauro Bigonzetti. The creations of this Italian master choreographer reveal an exceptional diversity, but SPRING focuses above all on the exuberant and vibrant side of his oeuvre. In addition to two of the biggest audience favourites from the Introdans repertoire – Cantata and (excerpts from) Rossini Cards – Bigonzetti is also creating a new thrilling choreography (world premiere) for SPRING, specially for Introdans. In many theatres Cantata will be accompanied live by the Italian female folk group Assurd. Roel Voorintholt: “At Introdans we aim to present one programme each year where we put the focus on a single choreographer – someone who’s of great importance to our company. This lets us show how an artist has developed their work over the course of time. But in the case of Bigonzetti, it’s certainly also because we know we’ll make our audiences very happy with this special ode. Bigonzetti’s work is hugely uplifting, it gives you energy, it makes you want to dance yourself and to celebrate life.”
End of Season Gala – variety, unexpected encounters and virtuoso choreographies
This year too, Introdans brings the theatre season to a festive close and heralds the summer with a dazzling End of Season Gala. With choreographies by Robert Battle, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Adriaan Luteijn, Inbal Pinto, and Daan Wijnands. In addition to several crackers from the Introdans repertoire, this time the programme also features a few surprising encounters with special guests. The well-known musical and theatre choreographer Daan Wijnands is creating a new work for the End of Season Gala. This will be a vibrant, revue-like choreography that also turns some radiant sunlight on several long-serving Introdans dancers who are now departing. Moreover, Introdans choreographer Adriaan Luteijn is once again creating a unique encounter specially for this End of Season Gala. This time several Introdans dancers and a group of well-known drag queens, led by the flamboyant Ma’MaQueen (an alias of Dennis Bijleveld), will share the stage in a new, spectacular choreography. Introdans director Roel Voorintholt: “Previously during the End of Season we focused on dancing highlights from the past season, but this time we aim to create a swinging, summery celebration. With variety, with new and unexpected collaborations and virtuoso choreographies.”
Interaction – building bridges and special encounters
Building on the experiences of the past twenty years, Introdans will also set up many special interaction and education projects and meetings in the new dance season in collaboration with social, healthcare and education partners and various guest dancers from different social and cultural worlds. Such as the VR dance experience VRtuoos VRtueel, dance projects with the elderly, dance education projects for students, youth productions with amateurs, and many other projects. “It is great to see how dance can open up worlds, connect people and offer them a different, often unknown way to communicate,” says choreographer and artistic initiator of interaction & inclusion at Introdans Adriaan Luteijn.
