After previous editions in, among others, Beijing, Japan, Hong Kong, Brazil, Indonesia, and the Netherlands, the inclusive choreography Iungo by Adriaan Luteijn will premiere this year in Bogotá, Colombia. This new version will be presented on December 4 during Día de la Diversidad, on the initiative of IDARTES and Teatro Jorge Eliécer Gaitán.
For this edition, Luteijn is collaborating with an entirely Colombian cast. It consists of a remarkable mix of dancers with diverse physical abilities, ages, gender identities, and dance backgrounds, combined with academically trained professional dancers from Colombia. The result promises to be a unique and inspiring encounter, where different worlds come together on a single stage.
As with every edition of Iungo, the core artistic principles are also central in Bogotá: the bench, as the place where the dancers meet; the music, the Larghetto from Chopin’s first piano concerto; certain fixed dance combinations and patterns; and the cast, which consists of a mix of professional dancers and dancers from diverse social, cultural, physical, and age backgrounds.
Iungo is the Latin word for “I connect,” and that is precisely what Introdans choreographer Adriaan Luteijn does like no other. In his series De Ontmoeting (The Encounter), he has been bringing together people with different physical, social, cultural, and intellectual backgrounds alongside academically trained modern professional dancers for over twenty years. The goal is to show that dance is for everyone and that even dancers who do not fit the standard image can deeply move and astonish audiences.
