EXPERIENCE THE BEST OF DUTCH DANCE IN ONE EVENING
For the twenty-seventh time, the most famous ballet couple the Netherlands has ever known, Alexandra Radius and Han Ebbelaar, will host the Dutch Ballet Gala. Once again, all the major Dutch dance companies will take the stage in this special benefit performance in support of Stichting Dansersfonds ’79. A wonderful opportunity to support Dutch dance with your presence, and also to (re)discover the very best of Dutch dance in a single evening.
Introdans – Caught
David Parsons’ iconic solo Caught is a fusion of art and technology, demanding perfect timing and athletic endurance. The result is an awe-inspiring play with gravity, in which the dancer seems to float through the air, devour the space, and then, almost magically, come to a halt in the center of the stage. At the heart of the piece lies the human fascination with flight, something Parsons believes is universal. The idea for Caught came after his collaborations with photographers and his study of how light in photography is used to capture images. By manipulating the light so that only certain shapes and positions are illuminated, he created a sequence of snapshots. When combined, these isolated images form a dance that appears to take place entirely in the air.
Introdans – Waltz of the Flowers (part of The Nutcracker)
At the Ballet Gala, Introdans will perform an excerpt from the production The Nutcracker, which we presented last winter: a tantalizing contemporary version full of creativity. In this interpretation, Marie (called Clara in some ballet versions) is not a young, sweet girl but an adolescent who feels lost in her own body and, in her dreams, goes in search of herself. For Verbruggen, his Nutcracker is primarily about ‘cracking’ your own shell, your own nut, in order to discover your true identity.
Introdans – Iungo
Iungo is the Latin word for “I bring together / I connect,” and that is exactly what Introdans choreographer Adriaan Luteijn is uniquely capable of doing. In his series De Ontmoeting (The Encounter) – of which Iungo is a part – he has been bringing together people from diverse physical, social, cultural, and intellectual backgrounds with academically trained contemporary professional dancers for more than twenty years. The goal is to show that dance is for everyone, and that dancers who don’t fit the traditional mold can also move and astonish audiences deeply. Luteijn has previously presented versions of Iungo in Japan, Brazil, Indonesia, and South Africa, and this October it will also travel to China. In this edition, Introdans dancers meet two guest performers, each excelling in their own way: presenter and writer Eva Eikhout (who also appeared in Pro Forma 1 and 2 and HubClub’23), and Ugandan contemporary dancer Joseph Tebandeke, whom Luteijn first met at a festival in South Africa.
