Sixteen-year-old Jayden from Arnhem was, for one day, the boss at dance company Introdans on Tuesday, June 3. JINC organizes the annual event Baas van Morgen (“Boss of Tomorrow”) in collaboration with companies and schools across the Netherlands, aimed at giving students who could use a helping hand a strong start on the job market. They get to experience what it’s like to be in charge of a company for a day or to make important decisions as a politician. Thirty-six students from the Leerpark (secondary education) and Monchyschool (primary education) in Arnhem, and Mondial College (secondary education) in Nijmegen took part. Introdans’ Manager of Production, Technology & Facilities, Maarten van den Berg, stepped aside for the day for Jayden, a practical learning student from Leerpark Arnhem. It was an educational and unforgettable day, together with all the colleagues and dancers at Introdans.

The day kicked off with a joint breakfast at OHRA in Arnhem for all the Bosses of Today and Tomorrow. Hundreds of young people across the country took part in the event.

From production and technology to dance
Maarten van den Berg: “Jayden had a very diverse day. He got to experience what it’s like to be in charge at a professional dance company. At school, he learns a lot about technology, construction, and electronics. He’s not yet sure what he wants to do later on. Because of his interests, Jayden got a look behind the scenes at our production and technical departments, but he also really enjoyed seeing the dancers working hard in the studio! It was a special experience to host a Boss of Tomorrow in our house again.”

Jayden also learned a lot from the day: “I only knew Introdans by name, and I really enjoyed seeing what all goes into creating a dance performance — it’s not just the dancing. After a tour of the studios, offices and costume workshop at Introdans, I watched the dancers rehearse in the studio. In the afternoon, I visited the Introdans warehouse, where they store the sets and technical equipment. It was really cool to see this side of the organization — something you wouldn’t normally get to see!” Jayden even contributed ideas for the set design of an upcoming production.

Encouraging talent
With Baas van Morgen, JINC — a non-profit organization that fights against inequality of opportunity among young people — aims to highlight the fact that a successful career is not within everyone’s reach. Children born in environments with poverty and few role models have a much smaller chance of getting ahead than their peers from wealthier neighborhoods, no matter how smart or talented they may be.
Companies participating this year in Arnhem and Nijmegen included: Biovakantieoord, Cito, Cultuur Oost, EY Arnhem, Gazelle, Musis and Stadstheater, OHRA, Omroep Gelderland, OostNL, Papendal, Police East Netherlands, Scalabor, SKAR, Yuverta, Van der Valk, Amalia Children’s Hospital and Porsche Centrum Gelderland.
