What an incredible achievement! Draughts player Jan Groenendijk has claimed the world championship title for the first time in his career. The 26-year-old Dutchman defeated the Ukrainian defending champion Yuriy Anikeiev twice, as required, in a thrilling duel at the town hall of Wageningen.
In 2019, we already saw Jan shine during De Ontmoeting Next. In this special edition, choreographer Adriaan Luteijn brought together four Olympic athletes from TeamNL: a boxer, a badminton player, a basketball player, and Jan as a draughts player. The goal? To explore the boundaries between sport and dance. The result? An inspiring collaboration where dancers and athletes challenged each other, discovered new talents, and created impressive choreographies.
Your dedication and talent already showed that you excel at pushing boundaries. And now, with this world title, you once again prove your unmatched perseverance and excellence.
We are incredibly proud of you and look with admiration at all you have achieved. Congratulations again on this amazing success!
