Yesterday marked the festive closing of a vibrant week of art and movement in Curaçao. From Tuesday through yesterday, students and teachers from the Blenchi School and Skol Myrna Dovale took part in Dancing Words – Spoken Dance 2.0, an innovative and inclusive cultural project. The collaboration between Introdans, Fonds Kind & Handicap, and the schools offered young people in (secondary) special education a unique opportunity to experience dance and Spoken Word.
Throughout the four project days, expression, creativity, and enjoyment were at the heart of the programme. Participants discovered how dance and spoken language can come together as a powerful way to tell stories and express emotions, combining Antillean dance styles with the broad repertoire of Introdans. Tailor-made workshops created space for talent development, self-confidence, and cultural exploration. On Wednesday, 18 March, students from Skol Myrna Dovale gave an initial presentation for their peers, teachers, and invited guests. The final highlight took place yesterday at the Blenchi School, where a festive closing presentation officially wrapped up the project week.
In addition to the workshops for students, the Teacher-to-Teacher programme formed an important part of the project. Antillean and Dutch cultural and education professionals exchanged knowledge and worked together in co-teaching sessions, aiming to strengthen inclusive practices and expertise within special education.
The project was guided by a team of professionals, including Adriaan Luteijn and Mironne Gerritsen from Introdans, Lisa de Lannoy for local dance integration, and Georgios Lazakis and Crisen Schorea for Spoken Word and visual arts. Sarah Mensink and Nico Teunissen led the Teacher-to-Teacher programme.
With Dancing Words – Spoken Dance 2.0, the participating organisations once again take an important step towards a cultural sector that is accessible to everyone. The project builds on a shared mission: to stimulate talent development, inclusion, and personal expression through art as a universal language.
