Dancer and Choreographer
Dai Matsuoka is a seasoned Butoh dancer and choreographer. He graduated from Sophia University in Comparative Culture and the Kuwasawa Design School. Since 2005, he has been performing with the renowned dance company Sankai Juku, appearing in some of their most celebrated works, including Kinkan Shonen, Tobari, Unetsu, ARC, and TOTEM. He also teaches for the Scramble Dance Project in Odawara, where dancers with and without disabilities collaborate to create dance. Matsuoka runs BUTOH CHOREO LAB, an online platform offering video lessons from prominent Butoh dancers.
Director of LAND FES
As the director of LAND FES since 2011, Matsuoka invites audiences to experience dance performances through city walks, making dance accessible and interactive. His work has led to collaborations with artists worldwide, including with Phantom Limb Company (NY) for Falling Out and Paola Prestini (NY) for Houses of Zodiac. In 2021, he served as curator for Tokyo Real Underground, a featured program in Tokyo Tokyo FESTIVAL Special 13. He is also a certified Life Kinetik® trainer, underscoring his dedication to movement and dance.
