Dance Company Invests in 100% Sustainable Transport for Sets, Costumes, and Technical Equipment
From this spring, Arnhem-based Introdans will transport all its sets, costumes, and technical equipment for performances entirely using electric trucks from transport company Pieter Smit. The company tours its large-scale productions across the country, from Maastricht to Groningen and from Rotterdam to Enschede. “Introdans has always aimed to operate as sustainably as possible. We are proud to take an additional step in the right direction with this initiative,” says Introdans’ managing director Marieke van ’t Hoff.
Sustainability is firmly embedded in Introdans’ operations. The company, which is directly supported by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science via the Basic Infrastructure (BIS) as one of the five major dance companies in the Netherlands, works sustainably by reviving productions and reusing sets and costumes. “We critically examine our production and planning processes: we are actively working on more efficient scheduling to combine and/or reduce transport and travel movements,” explains Maarten van den Berg, production, technical & housing manager at Introdans.
On behalf of Introdans, Van den Berg participates in the Sustainable Production working group organized by the sector associations NAPK and VSCD. A large number of performing arts companies share knowledge in this group. “This collaboration partly inspired the ambition to truly pursue emission-free touring. It’s great that Introdans, together with companies like NDT and Jacob Alhbom, can take the lead and share experiences with other traveling dance and theatre companies.”
To enable electric transport of sets, costumes, and technical equipment to theatres nationwide, the working group collaborates with transport company Pieter Smit. All parties jointly invest in sustainable transport for the future. “The next step we are currently working on is transporting dancers in an electric coach – we hope to make that a reality in the future,” adds Van den Berg.
Introdans will start using electric trucks with the tour of LARBI, a focus program centered on renowned choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. The performance premieres on March 20, 2026, at Stadsschouwburg Utrecht. With LARBI, Introdans will visit more than twenty theatres across the Netherlands, concluding the tour on June 4 at ITA in Amsterdam.
