Joseph Tebandeke

Joseph Tebandeke is a Ugandan dancer and choreographer known for his inclusive and transformative approach to dance and movement. His work focuses on using art to tackle social challenges, with a strong emphasis on reinterpreting notions of ability. By integrating a range of dance traditions and movement practices, Tebandeke creates performances that challenge societal views of disability. His work extends beyond traditional dancers, advocating for the decolonization of dance as an accessible language for everyone.

Tebandeke has performed and collaborated internationally in venues such as Kampnagal Hamburg (“Mental Workout,” 2023), Berlin (“Moving Margin Research,” 2022), South Africa’s Sibikwa Arts Festival (2022), Vienna’s ImPulsTanz (2022), Sweden’s Assitej Children’s Festival, Mali’s Eco Fest (2020), Germany’s Freiburg Contact Impro Festival (2019), and Rwanda’s various festivals including the East Africa Nights of Tolerance (2017), Tuzinne Festival (2017-2018), and Ubumuntu (2018). Through his work, Tebandeke aims to reshape the understanding of ability and create a more inclusive artistic community.
