In the absurdist Sechs Tänze, master choreographer Jiří Kylián shows his most playful and exuberant facets. Kylián sees Mozart as the supreme example of someone of who understood life in all its richness, imagination, clownery and craziness. In Sechs Tänze he pulls out all the stops – farcical humour, dusty powdered wigs, hooped skirts on little wheels, gracious curtseys and mournful pouting lips – to emphasise, in harmony with Mozart’s spirit, that life is actually nothing more than a masquerade or a dress rehearsal for something that should lead us deeper and have much greater meaning.
“Kylián gives us so much to look at with wigs, hooped skirts on wheels, fencing matches and other visual humour that you could almost forget there’s some superb dance on the stage, too.”

Performed under a fairylike sky of eighty burning candles, Un Ballo is a wonderfully restrained, atmospheric music ballet set to two compositions by Maurice Ravel. The choreographer Jiří Kylián himself once described the work as ‘an exercise in musicality and sensitivity between male and female partners.’ Complex lifts, risky balances, an emphasis on synchronicity as well as constantly changing energy are just a few of the challenges that keep the dancers on this ‘ball’.
“Under a sky of candles and set to music by Ravel, a refined and complex dance celebration unfolds. The mass movements and synchronous quality are beautiful. But a hush also descends as the ladies create strange, sculptural forms in their strapless evening dresses, balancing on the feet of the men.”

In Lieder Eines Fahrenden Gesellen (Songs Of A Wayfarer), Jiří Kylián translates the composition of the same name by Gustav Mahler into beautiful dance. Mahler wrote the song cycle between 1883 and 1885, in his young twenties, while feeling lovesick and broken-hearted. In this intimate choreography Kylián doesn’t follow the songs precisely, but in five highly inspired duets he still expresses the diverse moods and emotions of the music – ranging from the joy of first love to melancholy, jealousy and a longing for death. Introdans is proud to have received permission – currently as the only Dutch company – to perform this masterpiece.
“An impressive and sometimes breathtaking beauty of a dance performance.”

New to the Introdans repertoire is the ballet Petite Mort. In French and some other languages, the thrill and ecstasy of sexual intercourse is described as the “small death.” Kylián based his choreography on slow movements from Mozart’s two most famous piano concertos: Adagio and Andante.
